After secondary school I was so sure I knew exactly what I wanted
to do with my life, but unlike my friends I decided to take a year and figure
myself out. Obviously most of that time was spent watching all the movies and
series I had missed but I also learned two languages, took a course in 3D animation
and the famous computer classes everyone takes. During this same time I also learned
about blogging and decided to try it out.
As a blogger I used so many of the skills I learned in my 3D
animation course and I also learned that I was more interested in the marketing
aspect of blogging and content creation, (I’m talking about the editing of
videos, images and creation of animations that I studied.) I also learned how
to make clothes during that period, oh wait I also built my own website so that’s
yet another skill I learned.
While I’ll be graduating years (just two) after my peers I am
so glad I took that gap year. You learn so much about yourself and your
environment in just 12 months.
Well now that I am graduating I am really tempted to take
yet another gap year. Before you freak out hear me out.
I would like to travel to at least two countries not just to
site see, but to do some volunteer work, I think it would be a great way for me
to learn so much more and don’t forget I’ll be building my CV and gaining work
experience and skills.
I’d like to take time off to learn about where I am at as a
person, I think jumping straight into employment won’t offer me the opportunity
to do that because I will be adjusting to a new life too soon.
But really taking a gap year after graduation would be great
for you. You can join one of those gap year programs which are great for
filling in the skill gaps in your CV, gaining work experience and complimenting
your college background. It actually puts you at an advantage when you start
actively looking for a job. Don’t forget it’s also a great way to build
connections.
Besides what’s the hurry to find a job, do it now while your
parents are probably still taking care of all your bills.
So would you take a gap year or did you?
